The Glass Castle: A Memoir

The Glass Castle featuring my blue lace agate bracelet because the lower right corner of the book is tattered already due to frequent rereads. 😂

Reading this memoir is an experience. I have read this book for twice already, once when I was in college and once after graduation. But then I watched the adaptation for the first time yesterday, and then after getting teary-eyed at the ending, I said what the heck, and reread it again for the third time.

(Btw please read the book even if you have watched the film already. The film was true to the story, but of course it’s shortened, so the memorable lines are all mixed-up).

The Glass Castle evoked raw emotions in me, and I find myself rooting for the Walls children every single time. Knowing this is a true story magnified them even more.

Jeannette Walls wrote this memoir in an almost-unsentimental prose, in a way that you know that she had the memories seared in her heart, but now could speak of them casually because she had already reconciled herself with all that her family had gone through.

Her story is a testament for human resilience and the adage “Blood us thicker than water.” It always has a way of opening my heart up — to pain, love & understanding… 🥺

But no matter what I say, I could never do this book justice.

So, let me just recommend this book

* to anyone who ever believed in his/her father and was disillusioned,

* to anybody who dealt or is presently dealing with alcoholism,

* and to everyone who has had conflicted feelings for his/her family members.
